What is a full moon?

A full moon is the moment the Moon sits directly opposite the Sun in the sky — the Earth between them — so we see its entire near side lit. That alignment, called opposition, happens once every lunar cycle, roughly every 29.5 days. The disc looks full for a night or two on either side of the exact instant, but astronomically the "full moon" is a single moment: when the Sun–Moon separation reaches exactly 180°. That is the instant the date and time on this page mark.

Why full moons matter in astrology

Astrologically, the full moon is the peak of the lunar cycle — the point of maximum light, maximum visibility, and maximum tension. Where the new moon two weeks earlier was for planting an intention in the dark, the full moon is the harvest: whatever you set in motion comes to a head, and whatever you've been avoiding tends to surface. Because the Moon sits opposite the Sun, it always pits two zodiac signs against each other — the Sun's sign and the Moon's sign — which is why full moons so often feel like a tug-of-war between what you want and what you need. The sign the Moon occupies colors the whole mood: a full moon in fiery Aries lands very differently from one in watery Cancer.

Full moon names by month

Most months' full moons carry a traditional name handed down through Native American and colonial almanacs, each tied to what was happening in nature at that time of year. They're a folk calendar written in moonlight — the Wolf Moon for the howling cold of January, the Strawberry Moon for June's brief berry season, the Harvest Moon for the bright nights that let farmers work late in autumn.

Frequently asked questions

When is the next full moon?

The next full moon's exact date and time are shown at the top of this page, along with the zodiac sign the Moon is in at that moment and a live countdown. The dates are computed from the Moon's and Sun's real positions, so they update automatically — there's nothing to look up.

What is a full moon, exactly?

A full moon is the instant the Moon sits directly opposite the Sun, with Earth between them, so its entire near side is lit and it appears as a complete bright disc. That alignment is called opposition, and it recurs roughly every 29.5 days — the length of one lunar cycle.

What zodiac sign is the full moon in?

At a full moon the Moon sits exactly opposite the Sun, so the Moon is always in the sign opposite the Sun's current sign. The Moon moves through a new zodiac sign every two to two-and-a-half days, so each month's full moon falls in a different sign — which is why every full moon carries a slightly different emotional tone.

Why does each full moon have a name like Wolf Moon or Harvest Moon?

The traditional full-moon names come from Native American and colonial almanacs, where each month's full moon was named for something happening in nature at that time of year — wolves howling in January (Wolf Moon), strawberries ripening in June (Strawberry Moon), or the bright nights that let farmers gather crops in autumn (Harvest Moon).

How is the next full moon date calculated?

We read the Sun's and the Moon's positions along the ecliptic from a Swiss Ephemeris and find the moment their separation reaches exactly 180° — the definition of a full moon. The result is projected from the same calculation that powers our live moon-phase page, so the two always agree. Because the real lunar month varies by a few hours, the listed time can shift slightly.
