Numerology Calculator

Numerology reads the numbers hidden in your birth date and your name — and treats each one as a character, the way astrology treats a sun sign. Start with your life path number, drawn from the day you were born: it's the one number that never changes and the best place to begin. Then add your name numbers, drawn from the letters you were given, when you want the finer detail — your talents, your private wants, the first impression you make. What numerology is

Numerology is the practice of finding meaning in the numbers that recur in a life. Its modern form rests on a simple idea: any multi-digit number can be reduced to a single root between 1 and 9 by adding its digits together, and each of those roots carries a consistent character. A 1 leads; a 2 relates; a 7 seeks. The work is in reading those characters in context — in your birth date, in your name, in a year, in a door number.

There is one important exception to the reduction. The numbers 11, 22, and 33 are called master numbers, and when a calculation lands on one of them it is kept as it is rather than reduced to 2, 4, or 6. Numerology treats these as carrying a more intense, more demanding version of the root beneath them — more potential, and more pressure.

How a number is reduced

Every numerology calculation ends the same way: you add digits together until a single one remains. The year 1992 becomes 1+9+9+2 = 21, and 21 becomes 2+1 = 3. The only time you stop early is when you reach 11, 22, or 33 — then you hold there. This is how both your life path and your name numbers are found; only the starting material differs.

Life path vs name numbers — which to use, and when

These two numbers answer different questions, and people often mix them up. Your life path comes from your birth date, which you didn't choose and can't change — so it describes the journey you're here to walk, the theme that holds across a whole life. Reach for it first, and whenever you want the big picture: the kind of person you are, the lessons that keep returning.

Your name numbers come from letters that can change — a married name, a name you go by, a stage name — so they read more like the equipment you're working with than the road you're on. Reach for them when you want the closer detail: your talents (expression), what you privately want (soul urge), and the first impression you make (personality). If you only calculate one number, make it your life path. If you want to understand a specific name — yours, a child's, a business's — calculate the name numbers.

Your birth date — the life path number

Your life path number is calculated by reducing your full date of birth — month, day, and year — to a single root. It is the backbone of your numerology chart and describes the overarching theme of your life: the kind of journey you keep finding yourself on, whatever the details. If you only ever calculate one number, calculate this one.

Your name — the expression, soul urge, and personality

Where your birth date is fixed, your name is given — and numerology reads three different numbers from it using the Pythagorean system, which maps each letter A–Z onto a digit 1–9. Your expression (destiny) number uses every letter and names your natural talents and what you're here to build. Your soul urge number uses only the vowels and names what you privately long for. Your personality number uses only the consonants and names the first impression you make.

Numerology meets astrology

Numbers and stars have long been read side by side. In the Lune tradition each life path number resonates with a ruling planet and sign — once you know your number you can read its zodiac sign and the planet behind it. Curious about repeating numbers instead? See the angel numbers guide.
