How the Pythagorean system works
Name numerology assigns every letter of the alphabet a number from 1 to 9, cycling through nine letters at a time: A is 1, B is 2, on up to I at 9, then J starts again at 1, and so on to Z. To find a name number you add up the values of the relevant letters and reduce the total to a single root — unless it lands on a master number.
A worked example: Ada Lovelace
Take the name Ada Lovelace. To find her expression number you map every letter to its digit and add them up:
A(1) + D(4) + A(1) + L(3) + O(6) + V(4) + E(5) + L(3) + A(1) + C(3) + E(5) = 36, and 3 + 6 = 9. So her expression number is a 9 — the giver, the number of compassion and completion.
The same name splits two more ways. The vowels alone — A, A, O, E, A, E — give 1 + 1 + 6 + 5 + 1 + 5 = 19, and 1 + 9 = 10, and 1 + 0 = 1: a soul urge that privately wants independence. The consonants — D, L, V, L, C — give 4 + 3 + 4 + 3 + 3 = 17, and 1 + 7 = 8: a personality that reads as capable and in command. The calculator above does the same for any name in an instant.
The three name numbers
Expression (destiny) number — calculated from every letter of your full name. It describes your natural talents and the direction you're built to grow in: the sum of what you have to work with.
Soul urge (heart's desire) number — calculated from the vowels only. It names what you actually want underneath the surface, the motivation you may not say out loud.
Personality number — calculated from the consonants only. It describes the version of you that people meet first, before they know the rest.
Chaldean vs Pythagorean — and which this uses
There are two main systems for turning a name into numbers, and they don't always agree. The Pythagorean system — the one this calculator uses — is the more common in the West. It is tidy and easy to follow: the alphabet is laid out in order and each letter takes the next digit, A through I as 1 to 9, then J starts the cycle over. Because the rule is purely positional, you can check the math by hand, which is exactly what the chart and the worked example above let you do.
The older Chaldean system, rooted in ancient Babylon, assigns its values differently — it groups letters by the sound and vibration they were thought to carry rather than by alphabetical position, and it only uses the digits 1 through 8, since it treats 9 as sacred and holds it apart from the ordinary letters. The two systems will often hand the same name two different numbers, which is why people sometimes run both.

About master numbers
If any of your name numbers reduces to 11, 22, or 33, the calculator keeps it as a master number rather than reducing it further to 2, 4, or 6. These carry the same core themes as the single digits beneath them but at a higher voltage — more potential and more pressure. An expression 11 is a more visionary, more demanding version of a 2; a 22 a more world-building version of a 4.
