What your Venus sign means

In astrology, Venus is the planet of love, beauty, attraction, and value. Where your Sun sign is your core identity, your Venus sign is something more intimate — it describes how you give and receive affection, what you find beautiful, what you treasure in a relationship, and the kind of romance that actually makes you feel loved.

It's the difference between knowing you're a Leo and knowing you're a Leo who loves like a Scorpio — all-in, intense, and devoted. Two people with the same Sun sign can court, flirt, and fall in love in completely different ways depending on where Venus sat in the sky when they were born. That's why your Venus sign is one of the most revealing placements in your chart when it comes to love.

Your Venus sign in love and attraction

Your Venus sign colours every part of how you do romance. It shapes what attracts you — the qualities, energy, and even the aesthetics you find magnetic. It shapes how you express love — whether through words, touch, acts of care, grand gestures, or quiet devotion. And it shapes what you value — the things that make a relationship feel safe, exciting, or worth keeping.

A fire-sign Venus (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) tends to love boldly and chase the spark. An earth-sign Venus (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) loves steadily and shows it through loyalty and effort. An air-sign Venus (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) falls for the mind and a meeting of equals. A water-sign Venus (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) loves deeply, intuitively, and from the heart. Knowing yours helps you understand your own patterns in love — and what you genuinely need from a partner.

How your Venus sign is calculated

Your Venus sign is found by calculating the exact position of the planet Venus in the zodiac at the moment you were born. We take your birth date and city, work out Venus's longitude in the sky using the same astronomical engine that powers a full birth chart, and read off the sign it was passing through.

Venus moves relatively slowly — it spends roughly three to five weeks in each sign — so unlike your Rising sign, your Venus sign almost never depends on your exact birth time. That's why you can find it from your date and city alone. The one exception is if you were born on a day when Venus changed signs; right at that boundary, an exact birth time can make the difference. If your birthday lands near a sign change, adding your time gives you the most certain result.

Venus sign FAQ

Do I need my exact birth time?

Usually no. Because Venus stays in one sign for weeks at a time, your date and birth city are almost always enough to pin it down. The only time your exact time matters is if you were born on the very day Venus crossed from one sign into the next — then adding your time removes any doubt.

What's the difference between my Sun sign and my Venus sign?

Your Sun sign is your core identity — the “who you are.” Your Venus sign is your love nature — the “how you love.” They're often different signs, which is why two people with the same star sign can approach romance in totally different ways.

Can my Venus sign be the same as my Sun?

Yes. Venus is never far from the Sun in the sky — at most about two signs away — so it sometimes lands in the same sign as your Sun. When it does, your identity and your love style point in the same direction, which can make how you love feel especially clear and consistent.

Why does my Venus sign matter for love?

Because it describes what you're actually drawn to and what makes you feel loved — not in theory, but in practice. Understanding your Venus sign (and a partner's) can explain attraction, friction, and the kind of romance that genuinely works for you.
