Zodiac sun signs

The sun sign is the part almost everyone already knows. When someone says “I’m a Pisces,” they mean their Sun was in Pisces the moment they were born — the zodiac sign the Sun appeared to be standing in front of from where they stood on Earth.

Why your birthday decides your sun sign

Earth orbits the Sun once a year, and from our point of view that motion makes the Sun drift slowly across the same ring of constellations we met earlier — the zodiac. Because the orbit repeats on schedule, the Sun moves through all twelve signs in the same order at the same time every year. That’s why a birthday alone is enough to fix your sun sign: everyone born in, say, early-to-mid August has the Sun in Leo.

Your sun sign is simply where the Sun was standing on the day you were born — and since the Sun keeps the same yearly calendar, the date is all it takes to know it.

One technical note worth keeping in your pocket: we use the tropical zodiac, which anchors the signs to the seasons — the start of Aries to the spring equinox — rather than to the present-day position of the constellations. It’s the system nearly all Western astrology, including Lune, is built on.

The Sun — the single most important point in your chart. Its sign is the headline; the rest of the chart is the story underneath.

Reading a sun sign as a sentence

Remember the grammar from the last chapter: a planet is a verb and a sign is the adverb that colours it. The Sun’s verb is the most fundamental one of all — it stands for “I am.” So your sun sign isn’t a small label; it’s the adverb attached to your very sense of self.

Take our guide, Mira. She was born on August 2, which makes her a Leo Sun. Leo is fundamentally bold, warm, proud, and generous — so the sentence reads cleanly:

Sun
is the verb — I am, the core of who you are.
Leo
is the adverb — boldly, warmly, generously.
Sun in Leo = “I am fundamentally bold and warm — I shine, and I want others to be warmed by it.”
A lion silhouette haloed by the Sun — Mira's Leo Sun, bold and warm
Mira's Sun sits in Leo: 'I am' spoken boldly, proudly, generously.

The twelve sun signs and their dates

Here is the full year, in order, with the date range the Sun spends in each sign. Find your birthday to find your sun sign — and tap any sign to read its full story.

The sun sign is only the beginning

It’s tempting to stop here — the sun sign is the one piece of astrology that fits on a coffee mug. But it’s a single sentence, and you are a whole paragraph. Your Moon describes your inner emotional life, your rising sign sets the tone of how you meet the world, and the rest of the planets fill in everything in between. Two people can share a sun sign and live almost nothing alike.

Mira is a Leo Sun — but she’s also a Sagittarius Moon and a Pisces Rising, and those quietly bend the bold Leo headline into someone restless, dreamy, and far harder to read than “Leo” alone would suggest. The next chapters pick up exactly there.

Frequently asked questions about zodiac sun signs

What is a sun sign?

Your sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun appeared to be standing in front of, from where you stood on Earth, the moment you were born. When someone says "I'm a Pisces," they mean their Sun was in Pisces at birth. The Sun's verb is the most fundamental one of all — "I am" — so your sun sign is the adverb attached to your very sense of self.

Why does my birthday decide my sun sign?

Earth orbits the Sun once a year on a repeating schedule, so from our view the Sun drifts through all twelve zodiac signs in the same order at the same time every year. That's why a birthday alone fixes your sun sign — everyone born in early-to-mid August, for example, has the Sun in Leo.

Does astrology use the tropical or sidereal zodiac?

Lune, like nearly all Western astrology, uses the tropical zodiac. It anchors the signs to the seasons — the start of Aries to the spring equinox — rather than to the present-day position of the constellations. That's the system every sun-sign date range on this site is built on.

Is your sun sign the only thing that matters in astrology?

No — the sun sign is the one piece that fits on a coffee mug, but it's a single sentence and you're a whole paragraph. Your Moon describes your inner emotional life, your rising sign sets how you meet the world, and the rest of the planets fill in everything between. Two people can share a sun sign and live almost nothing alike.
