The July birthstone: Ruby

July's birthstone is the ruby, and where January's garnet is a banked ember, the ruby is open flame. Its red is vivid, hot, and alive — the colour of blood, of a beating heart, of the sun at its most intense. Long called the king of gems, a fine ruby of pure 'pigeon's blood' red can be worth more per carat than a diamond. It's the perfect stone for the year's hottest month.

For thousands of years the ruby was the most coveted of all gems. Ancient warriors wore it into battle, some embedding it in their skin, believing its fire made them invincible and quickened the blood. In Sanskrit it was ratnaraj, 'king of precious stones'. Across cultures it became the gem of passion, courage, power, and protection — a stone that was thought to glow more deeply when danger or strong feeling was near, as if it shared the wearer's pulse.

Ruby is the red variety of corundum — the same mineral as sapphire, coloured red instead of blue by traces of chromium, the element that also makes it fluoresce and gives the best stones their inner fire. The legendary rubies came from the Mogok valley of Burma (Myanmar), still the source of the finest stones; Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Mozambique are other major sources. Truly fine large rubies are rarer than comparable diamonds or sapphires.

Different traditions assign July different stones. The modern list — set by the American jewellery trade in 1912 and the one most charts use today — sits alongside the older traditional list and the centuries-old Tibetan “mystical” list.

Meaning & symbolism

The ruby has always meant life at full blaze — its red is the colour of blood and a beating heart, and warriors once wore it into battle, some embedding it in the skin, believing its fire made them invincible. In Sanskrit it was ratnaraj, 'king of precious stones.' It became the gem of passion, courage, and power, thought to glow more deeply when danger or strong feeling was near, as if it shared the wearer's pulse.

Properties & benefits believed

Ruby is the stone of passion, vitality, and courage. It's said to fire up energy and drive, to strengthen the heart and the will, and to protect its wearer in conflict. The gem of love at its most intense — desire rather than tenderness — it carries associations with confidence, leadership, and life force at full blaze.

These are traditional and folkloric associations — the meanings cultures have attached to ruby over centuries, not medical claims. Worn as a birthstone, it's above all a way of carrying your month with you.

Color & origin

Ruby is prized for its vivid red colour. The finest rubies historically come from the Mogok valley of Burma (Myanmar); other major sources are Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Mozambique.
